So that took a while to finish!
The production delay can be explained in many ways, but the largest factors were changes in both of our lives. In the past year Marc uprooted and moved his family from Illinois to North Carolina and I reunited with an old girlfriend. Both of these diversions meant we had less time for tinkering with sound.
For my part, I have to say having this much time pass has introduced a certain level of variety to the overall sonic picture of the album. The opening two tracks, for instance, went through a number of permutations before becoming the expansive analog synth statements they are now. On the other hand, pieces like my improvised piano-based "The Snow Road" and the atmospheric "A Poet Dog" were assembled very quickly with minimum overdubbing, second guessing, and tinkering.
Some tracks came into existence out of the pure force of experimentation. "Ghosts Of The Floorboards" is almost entirely made out of processed samples of music rising up from the dance studio below my apartment. The remote and chilly "The Whispered Hours" arrived over two sessions where randomly created synth settings were looped and composed into a cohesive texture statement.
My personal favorite tracks, "The Distance In Your Eyes" and "Dark Current", show the best of what we're capable of: speaking through sound and rhythmic emotions that are beyond our conventional vocabularies.
